Beno Gutenberg is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Seismologist who co-developed the Richter magnitude scale and determined the depth of Earth's core
Gutenberg was a German-American seismologist who determined the depth of Earth's outer core (the core-mantle boundary is named the Gutenberg discontinuity) and, with Charles Richter, developed the magnitude scale and the Gutenberg-Richter law relating earthquake frequency to magnitude. His work established quantitative modern seismology. Jewish, he emigrated from Germany to Caltech in 1930.
