Benny Goodman was a clarinetist and bandleader known as the 'King of Swing', whose 1938 Carnegie Hall concert marked jazz's arrival on the concert stage. He led one of the first racially integrated jazz groups, hiring Teddy Wilson and Lionel Hampton in the 1930s. He was the ninth of twelve children in a poor Jewish immigrant family from the Russian Empire.
