Bela Schick is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Pediatrician who devised the Schick test to detect susceptibility to diphtheria.
Bela Schick was a pediatrician who in 1913 devised the Schick test, a simple skin test to detect susceptibility to diphtheria, enabling targeted immunization against a then-deadly childhood disease. With Clemens von Pirquet he also helped introduce the concept of 'allergy.' He was born into a Jewish family in Boglar (Balatonboglar), Hungary, and later led pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
