Origins and early life
Barbara Butch was born in the ninth arrondissement of Paris on 17 March 1981 and grew up in the seventh in a traditionally observant Jewish family, her father French of Moroccan origin and her mother of Ashkenazi descent.
Work and career
She began playing records in Montpellier from 2004 to 2008 at a restaurant called L'Arrosoir, moved to Paris in 2013 and became a fixture of the city's night life at the Rosa Bonheur and La Mutinerie. She built her public voice around the acceptance of bodies as they are, and in 2020 she was the subject of a Télérama cover story on discrimination against fat people; in 2021 the Out d'or awards named her LGBT personality of the year.
On 26 July 2024 she stood at the decks for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, watched by an audience of hundreds of millions. In the days that followed she was targeted by a violent campaign of online abuse, antisemitic as well as homophobic, and she took the matter to court rather than fall silent. She was made a knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2025 and appointed artistic director of the Nuit Blanche of Paris for 2026.
