Avram Hershko is recognized among Israeli contributors to Science & Medicine — Discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation
Born in Hungary and brought to the newly founded State of Israel as a child in 1950, Hershko trained in medicine before turning to biochemistry at the Technion. With Aaron Ciechanover and Irwin Rose he uncovered the ubiquitin system, by which cells tag unwanted proteins for controlled destruction, work honored with the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He is an Israeli of Hungarian Jewish origin.
