Arnošt Lustig was a Czech-Jewish author whose novels and stories — including 'A Prayer for Katerina Horovitzova' and 'Dita Saxova' — drew on his experience of the Holocaust as one of the twentieth century's foremost literary witnesses. He was Jewish and, as a teenager, was deported to Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Buchenwald, escaping a death transport in 1945. He later taught in the United States before returning to Prague.
