How & why

Origins and early life

António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches was born on 7 March 1699 in Penamacor, in Portugal, a New Christian — a descendant of the Jews forcibly converted in 1497, 'a Marrano physician' in the words of the Encyclopaedia Judaica, believed to have kept the faith of his ancestors in secret; his family was hounded by the Inquisition, and he left Portugal for good in his twenties. He studied at Coimbra and Salamanca, then at Leiden under Boerhaave, the greatest teacher of medicine in Europe, and in 1731 went to Russia, where he served the empire for sixteen years: physician to the army, to the Empress Anna and to the court, and the doctor who nursed the young German princess who would become Catherine the Great through a grave illness.

In 1747 the Empress Elizabeth learned of his Jewish origin and dismissed him from the country — a detail this fiche records plainly as the reason.

Personal life

He settled in Paris, a member of the academies of sciences of St Petersburg and of Paris, wrote a treatise on venereal disease and a pioneering work on public health, and contributed to Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie; for Portugal he drafted reform plans for medical education. He died in Paris on 14 October 1783.
