How & why
Anna Seghers (born Netty Reiling) was a German novelist whose anti-fascist works 'Das siebte Kreuz' (The Seventh Cross) and 'Transit' rank among the most powerful literary responses to Nazism and the refugee experience. Born into a Jewish family in Mainz, she fled the Nazis via France to exile in Mexico before returning to East Germany, where she led the writers' union.
