How & why
Brookner was a British novelist and art historian who won the 1984 Booker Prize for Hotel du Lac and wrote finely observed novels of solitude and moral restraint, while also being the first woman to hold the Slade Professorship of Fine Art at Cambridge. She was an authority on French Romantic and neoclassical painting. Born to a Polish-Jewish immigrant family, she was Jewish.
