André Maurois, born Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog, was a French author celebrated for his elegant biographies of Shelley, Byron, Balzac, Hugo, Voltaire and others, as well as novels and history. Born into an Alsatian Jewish textile family, he was of documented Jewish origin. He was elected to the Académie française in 1938.
