Origins and early life
Alice Heine was born on 10 February 1857 in New Orleans.
Work and career
Her father, Michel Heine, was a German Jew who had come to Louisiana in 1837 and built with his brother the banking house A. & M. Heine, later of Paris, which lent heavily to Napoleon III; he was a cousin of the poet Heinrich Heine. Her mother was a Catholic Creole, and Alice was raised in her mother's faith — this fiche says so plainly; she figures here by her documented Jewish father.
Personal life
The family moved to Paris, where in 1875 she married the Duc de Richelieu and was widowed young; in 1889 she married Prince Albert I of Monaco and became the first American-born princess of the principality. Her reign was cultural: with her taste and her fortune she made Monte-Carlo a capital of the arts, drawing the great names of opera and ballet to its theatre — the seeds of the Monte-Carlo Opera's golden years and of the Ballets Russes' later home. Separated from the prince in 1902, she kept her title and her salon in Paris, where she died on 22 December 1925.
