Biography

Heinrich Heine is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — German Romantic poet and essayist (born Jewish; later baptized)

How & why

Heine was one of the greatest German lyric poets and essayists, whose Buch der Lieder inspired hundreds of Lieder by Schubert, Schumann and others, and whose sharp prose shaped modern feuilleton writing. He was born into a Jewish family and, facing legal barriers to a career, was baptized Lutheran in 1825, though his Jewish origin remained central to his identity and to how later antisemites attacked him.
