Wallenstein was an American cellist and conductor — the first cellist of the New York Philharmonic under Toscanini — who became music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1943–1956), the first American-born conductor to lead a major U.S. orchestra. He was Jewish, from a Chicago Jewish family. He was also a radio-music pioneer, founding the influential 'Wallenstein's Sinfonietta' broadcasts.
