Biography

Alfred Schild is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; general relativity

How & why

Schild was a theoretical physicist and a central figure in the postwar revival of general relativity, giving his name to 'Schild's ladder' (a method of parallel transport) and helping build the Center for Relativity at the University of Texas at Austin. Born to a German-Jewish family in Istanbul, he was interned in Canada as an 'enemy alien' during WWII before completing his physics training in Toronto. He co-founded key programs that made relativity a rigorous mainstream discipline.
