Yonath pioneered the crystallography of the ribosome — the cell's protein-making machine — developing techniques others thought impossible and mapping its structure atom by atom, which earned her a share of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the first won by an Israeli woman. She has worked her whole career at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot. Born in Jerusalem into a poor Jewish family, she has spent her life and work in Israel.
