Sinkov was a pioneering U.S. Army cryptanalyst, one of the first hires of William Friedman's Signal Intelligence Service, who helped break Japanese and other ciphers during World War II and later served as a senior NSA figure. He authored a widely used introduction to cryptanalysis. He was born into a Jewish immigrant family and raised in Brooklyn.
