Abraham Lempel was an Israeli computer scientist at the Technion who, with Jacob Ziv, created the LZ family of lossless data-compression algorithms (LZ77 and LZ78). These underlie ubiquitous formats such as GIF, PNG and ZIP and much of modern digital compression. He was Jewish and a Holocaust survivor.
