Born Isidore Hochberg to Yiddish-speaking Orthodox Jewish immigrants on New York's Lower East Side, Harburg became one of America's great lyricists. He wrote all the songs for 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939), including 'Over the Rainbow', which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became an enduring anthem of hope. He also wrote the Depression anthem 'Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?'.
