Origins and early life
Yevgeny Maksimovich Primakov was born at Kyiv on 29 October 1929 to a Jewish mother, Anna Yakovlevna Primakova, an obstetrician, and the site records him through that named parent; his obituary in the Guardian describes him as born to a Jewish mother and a Russian father, and the identity of the father remains unclear in the sources, which this fiche states rather than filling the gap. He was raised in Tbilisi, studied Arabic at the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, and made his name first as a scholar and journalist: correspondent for Pravda in the Middle East through the 1960s, then director of the Institute of Oriental Studies and of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations, and a member of the Academy of Sciences with a substantial body of work on the Arab world.
Work and career
Under Gorbachev he moved into politics, and after the Soviet collapse he headed the Foreign Intelligence Service from 1991 to 1996, was foreign minister from 1996 to 1998 and prime minister of Russia from September 1998 to May 1999, taking office in the middle of the rouble crash and stabilising the economy. This fiche states plainly that he is a contested political figure: the foreign policy doctrine associated with his name set Russia against a world led by the United States and argued for a multipolar order, and it is invoked in Moscow to this day; in March 1999 he turned his aircraft round over the Atlantic on learning of the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. He died in Moscow on 26 June 2015.
