How & why
Yakov Flier was a Soviet pianist who won top prizes at the 1936 Vienna and 1938 Brussels international competitions and became one of the leading figures of the Russian piano school, admired for his powerful Romantic playing. As a professor at the Moscow Conservatory he trained pianists including Bella Davidovich and Mikhail Pletnev. Flier was Jewish, born to a Jewish family in Orekhovo-Zuyevo.
