Austrian-British psychoanalyst, a close member of the Vienna circle around Sigmund and Anna Freud. He is known for research on early-childhood ego development — especially the infant's 'mouth-hand' relation and the differentiation of self from non-self — and edited the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis. A Jew, he left Vienna for London with the Freud circle in 1938 and later served as president of the British Psychoanalytical Society.
