Vladimir Voinovich was a Russian writer and satirist, best known for the anti-Soviet comic novel 'The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin', whose dissident work led to his expulsion from the USSR in 1980. His mother, Rozalia Goykhman, was Jewish (his father was of Serbian descent). He became one of the most celebrated voices of Russian literary dissent.
