Uziel Gal, born Gotthard Glas in Germany, fled Nazism and settled in British Mandate Palestine, where in the late 1940s he designed the Uzi submachine gun, adopted by the Israeli military and later exported worldwide. The compact, reliable weapon was named after him against his wishes. He was Jewish, and his family emigrated because of Nazi persecution.
