Tom Lehrer was a Harvard-trained mathematician who wrote and performed the sharpest satirical songs of the 1950s and 1960s — 'The Elements', 'Poisoning Pigeons in the Park', 'Who's Next' — then walked away from performing and taught mathematics and musical theatre at MIT, Harvard, Wellesley and UC Santa Cruz until 2001. In 2020 he placed all his lyrics in the public domain. He and his family were ethnically Jewish and generally secular; he attended Jewish Sunday school, and said his ties to Judaism had 'more to do with the delicatessen than the synagogue'.
