How & why

Fenchel is a Danish marine ecologist whose research illuminated the roles and population biology of microbial life, including the 'microbial loop' of carbon cycling and biogeochemistry in aquatic ecosystems. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society and formulated 'Fenchel's law' relating reproductive rate to body size. He is listed in a Jewish-scientists index; his published biographies do not document a Jewish background.
