Biography

Tim Steiner is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Co-founded Ocado and turned it from an online grocer into a robotics company that licenses automated warehouses worldwide

How & why

Tim Steiner was born in north London in 1969 and married at the Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue in 1999; his great-grandfather founded Steiner Leisure. He left Goldman Sachs the following year to start Ocado with two colleagues, betting that groceries could be sold online and picked by machine. Ocado spent a decade losing money and is now a FTSE company whose real product is the robotic warehouse it licenses to Kroger, Casino, Aeon and others — a British grocer that turned into an engineering firm.
