Origins and early life
Thomas Langmann was born in Paris on 24 May 1971, the son of the film-maker Claude Berri, born Claude Berel Langmann into a Jewish family of Polish and Romanian immigrants, and of Anne-Marie Rassam; the site records him through that named Jewish father, whose own films returned repeatedly to the Jewish experience in France.
Work and career
His brother Julien, who acted under the name Julien Rassam, died in 2002. He began as an actor in the 1990s and was twice nominated for the César for most promising actor before turning to production, the trade of his father.
Recognition
He produced the two-part Mesrine in 2008, on the French gangster Jacques Mesrine, and Astérix at the Olympic Games the same year, and in 2011 he produced The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius's silent black-and-white film about the coming of sound in Hollywood, which won the Academy Award for best picture in 2012, along with the BAFTA and the César; it was the first French-produced film to take the Oscar for best picture. He also produced Astérix and Obélix: God Save Britannia and Stars 80, and his production companies went into receivership in 2018, at the end of a decade in which he had financed some of the most expensive films made in France.
