Sumner Redstone built a family cinema chain into a media empire, taking control of Viacom in 1987 and later CBS, assembling assets including Paramount Pictures, MTV and Nickelodeon. Born Sumner Murray Rothstein, he was Jewish, from a Boston Jewish family. He became one of the most powerful figures in American media over decades of aggressive dealmaking.
