Steven Ronald Bochco was born to a Jewish family in New York City on 16 December 1943, the son of the painter Mimi and the concert violinist Rudolph Bochco, a Polish immigrant, and died in Los Angeles on 1 April 2018. With Hill Street Blues in 1981 he broke the shape of the American police series: overlapping dialogue, a handheld camera, a dozen storylines running at once and none of them resolved by the end of the hour. The series was nominated for 98 Emmy Awards over its run. He went on to create L.A. Law, Doogie Howser, M.D. and NYPD Blue, and the serialised drama that followed is built on what he did first.
