Stanisław Wygodzki was a Polish writer of Jewish origin, born in Będzin in 1907, who published his first collection of poems in 1933. Interned in the Będzin ghetto, he passed through Auschwitz, Dachau, Oranienburg and Sachsenhausen, and lost his wife, his daughter and his parents at Auschwitz. From 1947 he wrote poetry, short stories and a novel, and in 1969 received the Remembrance Award for excellence in literature on the Nazi atrocities against European Jewry.
He left Poland for Israel in 1968, driven out by the antisemitic campaign inside the Communist Party he had once served and been imprisoned for. He died in Tel Aviv in 1992.
