How & why

Simon Wolfson comes from the Glasgow Jewish family of Solomon Wolfson, a cabinet-maker whose son Isaac built Great Universal Stores and founded the Wolfson Foundation. He joined Next as a shop-floor salesman and has been its chief executive since 2001, running one of the few British high-street retailers to have thrived through the shift online. He endowed the Wolfson Economics Prize, the largest economics prize after the Nobel, and sits in the House of Lords.
