Shemp Howard, born Samuel Horwitz, was an American comedian and actor who was an original member of the Three Stooges and rejoined the trio in the 1940s and 1950s. His broad physical comedy became a staple of American short films. He was born into a Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant family in Brooklyn.
