Biography

Serge Klarsfeld is recognized among Jewish contributors to Civil Rights & Human Rights — French historian and Nazi hunter; documented the deportation of 76,000 Jews from France name by name and brought Barbie, Touvier and Papon to trial

How & why

Serge Klarsfeld was eight when his father was taken in a raid in Nice and deported to Auschwitz; the rest of the family survived hidden behind a false wall. With his wife Beate he tracked down Klaus Barbie in Bolivia and forced his extradition, and pursued Jean Leguay, Paul Touvier and Maurice Papon through the French courts until the state's own role was judged. His Memorial to the Jews Deported from France lists all 76,000 by name, and Le Mémorial des enfants gives 11,400 deported children a face and a date.
