Samuel Pallache is recognized among Jewish contributors to Historical & Religious Figures — Moroccan Jewish merchant and envoy who negotiated the 1610 treaty between Morocco and the Dutch Republic — the first formal alliance between a Muslim state and a Protestant European power — and helped found Amsterdam's Jewish community
Samuel Pallache's family had fled Iberia for Morocco at the Reconquista and settled in Fez. Acting for Sultan Zidan al-Nasir, he travelled to the newly independent Dutch Republic and negotiated the treaty of friendship and commerce concluded in 1610 — the first such agreement between a Muslim state and a Protestant European power, aimed at their common enemy, Spain. He lived in The Hague and Amsterdam as an openly practising Jew at a time when that was barely possible in Europe, was among the founders of the first Jewish congregation in Amsterdam, and was buried in its cemetery at Ouderkerk with Prince Maurice of Nassau walking behind the coffin.
