How & why

Samuel Lawrence Katz was an American pediatrician and virologist who, working with Nobel laureate John Enders in Boston, co-developed the attenuated measles vaccine licensed in 1963. Now used worldwide, it has prevented millions of deaths, and Katz went on to chair pediatrics at Duke and champion global immunization. He was born to a Jewish family in Manchester, New Hampshire.
