Sami Michael, born Kamal Salah into a large secular Jewish family in Baghdad, led a leftist underground group there as a teenager, fled arrest through Iran and reached Israel in 1949. He wrote in Hebrew, a language he learned as an adult, and his novels — 'Victoria', 'A Trumpet in the Wadi', 'A Handful of Fog' — put the Arab-Jewish world of Baghdad and the Arab citizens of Haifa at the centre of Israeli literature. He served as president of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel from 2001, and received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the Brenner Prize and the EMET Prize.
