S. Lawrence Zipursky is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Neurobiologist, research on neural wiring and cell-recognition molecules
Zipursky, a Canadian-American neurobiologist from a Jewish family (his father Alvin Zipursky was a noted Toronto pediatrician), studies how the brain wires itself during development. At UCLA he discovered how the Dscam gene generates thousands of protein variants that let neurons recognize 'self' and avoid it, a key mechanism of neural circuit assembly. He received the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize in 2015.
