Rudolf Schwarz was an Austrian-born conductor who led major orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Birmingham's City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. A Jewish musician, he survived imprisonment in the Auschwitz and Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust before rebuilding his career in Britain, where he championed the classical and contemporary repertoire.
