Rudolf Schindler is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physician who developed the first practical semiflexible gastroscope.

How & why

Schindler is regarded as the 'father of gastroscopy'; working with instrument-maker Georg Wolf, he developed the first practical semiflexible gastroscope around 1932, enabling direct examination of the stomach. Born into a Jewish family in Berlin, he was briefly imprisoned by the Nazis and emigrated to the United States in 1934 before returning to Germany late in life.
