Roman Vishniac was commissioned in 1935 by the Joint Distribution Committee to photograph impoverished Jewish communities across Poland, Romania, Lithuania and Hungary. He took some 16,000 pictures in four years; about 2,000 survived the war, smuggled out sewn into his clothing, and they are the fullest visual record of a world about to be annihilated. He was also a biologist who did pioneering work in colour photomicroscopy and time-lapse film of living cells.
