Origins and early life
Roland Goetschel was born at Strasbourg on 18 September 1930 into a Jewish family; his father kept a haberdashery at Schiltigheim.
Work and career
He became a philosopher and one of the principal French scholars of Kabbalah, that is of a body of texts long treated in French universities as an oddity rather than as thought. He directed Hebrew and Jewish studies at the University of Strasbourg II from 1976 to 1991, then headed the centre of Jewish studies at Paris-Sorbonne from 1991 to 1996, and was professor emeritus there afterwards: two generations of French students of Judaism passed through his teaching.
His books include Meir Ibn Gabbay: le discours de la Kabbale espagnole in 1981, a study of one of the great sixteenth-century systematisers of Jewish mysticism, and La Kabbale in 2005, which put the subject in the hands of ordinary readers without simplifying it out of existence. He settled in Jerusalem from 2001, and taught and wrote there. He was married and had five children, and died in Jerusalem on 9 March 2025, at ninety-four.
