Origins and early life
Roger Berg was born at Nancy on 22 December 1910 and died in the twelfth arrondissement of Paris on 3 June 1994. A lawyer with a doctorate in law, he spent his life on the internal life of French Jewry: he founded the Journal des communautés in 1950 and edited it until 1978, the paper through which the scattered congregations of France learned what the others were doing, and in 1951 he became secretary general of the Central Consistory, the administrative body of French Judaism, at the moment when it had to rebuild a network of communities that the deportations had emptied.
Work and career
His scholarship followed from the same concern, and joined his two competences, the law and the community: Les Juifs devant le droit français in 1984, a study of the legislation and case law that had governed Jews in France; Histoire du rabbinat français in 1992, covering four centuries; and Histoire des Juifs à Paris in 1997, which runs from the Merovingian king Chilperic to Jacques Chirac. He also took part in Paris-Jérusalem in 1986, a collective book on French Jewish identity. His wife Andrée Bloch was a lawyer too and worked with him on the publication of his books.
