How & why

Robert Rubin was born in New York to Jewish parents, Sylvia and Alexander Rubin. After twenty-six years at Goldman Sachs he became Bill Clinton's first National Economic Council director and then Secretary of the Treasury, where he handled the Mexican peso rescue of 1995 and the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 and presided over the first federal budget surpluses in a generation. He later co-chaired the Council on Foreign Relations.
