Robert Heinz Abeles was a biochemist who did pioneering work on enzyme reaction mechanisms and helped introduce mechanism-based ('suicide') inhibitors, which selectively inactivate an enzyme by exploiting its own catalytic chemistry. With William Jencks he built Brandeis University into a leading center for chemical biochemistry. Born into a Jewish family in Vienna, he emigrated with his family to the United States in 1939.
