Biography

Richard Shiffrin is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Cognitive psychologist known for the Atkinson-Shiffrin memory model

How & why

Shiffrin, with Richard Atkinson, formulated the 1968 Atkinson–Shiffrin model, which described memory as flowing through sensory, short-term and long-term stores governed by control processes — one of the most cited frameworks in cognitive psychology. He later developed influential theories of automatic and controlled attention and the SAM model of recall. He is listed among Jewish psychologists in Jewish biographical references (Jinfo); public biographies do not otherwise detail his religious identity.
