Richard Hell, born Richard Meyers, invented much of punk's look and stance — the torn shirt, the cropped hair — with the Neon Boys, Television, the Heartbreakers and finally Richard Hell and the Voidoids, whose 'Blank Generation' (1977) the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame counts among the 500 songs that shaped rock. He later wrote novels and criticism. His father, an experimental psychologist who died when Hell was seven, was Jewish; Hell has said he was 'born a Jew but he didn't believe in that', and raised him as a communist and an atheist.
