Rashbam (Rabbi Samuel ben Meir) was a leading French Tosafist and biblical commentator, a grandson of Rashi, renowned for pressing the 'peshat' (plain, contextual) reading of the Bible even where it differed from traditional midrashic interpretation. His commentaries on the Torah and Talmud remain standard in Jewish study. He was a Jewish rabbi and one of the foremost sages of medieval Ashkenaz.
