How & why

Raphaël Salem was a Greek-born French mathematician who worked in harmonic analysis, particularly on sets of uniqueness and on the algebraic integers now called Salem numbers. Originally a banker, he turned to mathematics and split his career between Paris and MIT. He was Jewish, from a Sephardic Jewish family of Salonika.
