Origins and early life
Pascal El-Bez, who works as Pascal Elbé, was born at Colmar in Alsace on 13 March 1967, into a Jewish family from Algeria that had come to France after independence.
Work and career
He trained at the Cours Florent and worked for years in small parts before Djamel Bensalah's Le Raid in 2002 and, above all, Michel Boujenah's Père et fils in 2003, which brought him a César nomination as most promising actor in 2004. He has been a steady presence in French cinema since, in Mauvaise foi, 24 mesures and Les Femmes du 6e étage, and has written screenplays as well as acting in them.
Recognition
In 2010 he directed his first film, Tête de Turc, about a boy from the housing estates who saves a doctor's life and is not thanked for it; it took the prize for best direction at the Montreal World Film Festival. He lost much of his hearing at forty-two and made it the subject of On est fait pour s'entendre in 2021, a comedy about deafness written from the inside, which did more for public understanding of hearing loss in France than any campaign. He was made a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2009.
