Otto Warburg (botanist)

Otto Warburg — the German Jewish botanist, not his namesake the Nobel biochemist — was an authority on tropical agriculture who chaired the Zionist Organization from 1911 to 1921. He founded the Palestine Land Development Company's agricultural experiment station at Ben Shemen and pushed the movement towards practical settlement work: forestry, plant introduction and scientific farming rather than diplomacy alone. The Hebrew University's agricultural faculty grew from the institutions he set up.
